Alexander Skarsgård talks to Win Butler in Interview magazine, discusses picking roles and nerves

For “True Blood” star Alexander Skarsgård, playing a formidable vampire on the hit HBO series doesn’t mean he’s wed to the idea of always being undead.

“I do get a lot of scripts sent to me where they basically want me to play Eric from ‘True Blood,’ but just a different name in a different movie,” the actor told his interviewer, Arcade Fire lead singer Win Butler, in the latest issue of Interview magazine.

“That’s not interesting to me. I don’t want to play a character that I’ve played for four years on a television show, change the name, and make him a zombie instead of a vampire.”

Skarsgård, whose turn as vampiric overlord Eric Northman has many fans hot and bothered, explained that for him, the roles that ARE interesting are those that represent a facet of his own personality.

“In a weird way, I always play myself, just through different mirrors,” he said. “If I read a script and I don’t connect with a character, if I can’t find the character on the page in my soul, then I’m not going to be able to do a good job.”

But by the same token, however, Skarsgård admitted to getting a little creeped out himself when fans – and potential directors – confuse his personality with that of his on-screen character.

“The thing that I feel to be a problem potentially is that you become that character, that in the industry, people associate it too closely with who you are and what you can do,” he said.

His “mysterious bad guy” personality has the potential to lock him into some pretty predictable roles, he explained, when it’s really nerves that he craves when looking for the next project – well, that and “f–k you money.”

“There’s got to be something new, something fresh,” he said. “I want to almost be intimidated when I embark on a journey. I wouldn’t say there’s a fear, but I do get slightly nervous in the beginning when that happens, and I like that feeling.

“That triggers me a lot.”

Thanks to Interview Magazine!!
All of you be sure to pick up the mag,

I was asked if I could help promote the 2nd Annual Giggle/Snort Awards, and how can I turn down the chance to spread the word about a writing contest. So, here’s the info from the website:

Alexander Skarsgård Graces June Cover Of GQ!

Yum! Alexander Skarsgård graces the June cover, and I have to say, he looks gorgeous!! Honestly, the premiere for HBO cannot come fast enough. Who’s ready for True Blood?!

And with every sexy cover, comes an interview. I’m sort of happy that Alex is being recognized for not only his looks, but his rising movie career as well. Here are some exerts from the article:

Similarly, a new chapter of Skarsgård's career is about to begin with a run of wildly disparate films: First comes Melancholia, set to premiere in Cannes, in which he performs for the first time on-camera alongside his father; then, in September, a remake of the classic Sam Peckinpah movie Straw Dogs; and finally there's next year's board-game-based blockbusterBattleship, already legendary, whatever its eventual virtues, as emblematic of the dearth of Hollywood imagination.

I actually cannot wait to see both Straw Dogs (September release) and Battleship (May 2012 release).

The water, too, is Skarsgård's element; he grew up on and around the Baltic Sea, ferrying through the Stockholm archipelago, vacationing at the family's spartan compound on Öland, off Sweden's southeastern coast. "I miss it," he says as we pick up speed, wind whipping across the deck. "Here, I live a few miles from the ocean"—in the Hollywood Hills—"but I'll wake up and think, 'Fuck, I haven't seen it for three weeks.’”

"You walk into the coffee shop, and the girl asks how your day is. When I first moved here, I loved that. I know it's shallow and superficial and she doesn't give a fuck about my day, but I still like it," he says. Sweden, by contrast, is more reserved. "It's difficult to get to know a Swede. But once you do, you're in," he says. And there's a stronger sense of boundaries. "You're never going to see a television show The Skarsgårds.”

In True Blood's ever expanding ensemble of fairies, werewolves, shape-shifters, telepaths, werecats, telefairies, vamp-shifters, and God knows what else, his Eric has become a solid center—the only character to display that essential quality shared by great HBO antiheroes past (think Tony Soprano or Omar Little or Al Swearengen): genuine unpredictability. Skarsgård's minutely calibrated deadpan somehow makes him the show's funniest, most cerebral, and most ferally frightening personage. "He does this thing with his eyes," says creator and show-runner Alan Ball. "It's like they become slightly unfocused and all of a sudden they're mirrors to this ancient, 1,000-year-old soul." Indeed what Eric is, his relative humanity, may be the only moral mystery to be found amidst all the steamy, gothic froth.

I Have A Date With Paramore and My Husband!

For some reason I am privy to the press releases for upcoming bands that will be playing in Hawaii. Regardless, I usually ignore them unless it's a band that I'm dying to see. Then I got an email that Paramore was coming to town. I remember hesitating... I like Paramore, but I don't love Paramore.

So I ignored the email.

Then my friend Lori, who is fantastic at organizing events and who watched "Twilight" 99 times in the theatre (yes, I said 99 times), created an event on facebook: "Paramore is coming to town". In summary, her simple words triggered something in me; let us Hawaii Twilight fans support Haley, a fellow twilight fan. SOLD.

But figuring out who to go to the concert with was tough. My daughter shrugged her nose, telling me she doesn't like Paramore, and my son's girlfriend is going back to college prior to the August date. Krysti, my co-writer and fellow twihard friend, has a busy schedule being a PR rep and fabulous mommy extraordinaire; she has four adorable children, the youngest one being 3.

And so I pouted.... Then, like a knight in shining armor, my husband out of nowhere said that I had not asked him, and that if I did, he'd go with me. Really, was as my first thought. And so I asked my husband, to which he quickly said, "of course". This is why I love my husband.

For those who don't know, it's hard finding twilight fans among your regular family and friends. Especially, the older you get. Truth be told, my husband was the one that took me to the "Twilight" midnight DVD release party at our local Hot Topic. And he's actual quite friendly (which is the opposite of me, I'm completely not social), and doesn't mind hanging or talking with twilight fans.

And so I'm happy to say I have a date with both Paramore and my husband... and the other great Twilight fans that will show up to support Haley and the boys, August 24, 2011.

I have to admit, I'm really looking forward to this and can’t wait to see them. Pics and updates when I see them in August.

Our Weather Yesterday!

Yesterday was literally, a clusterfuck of terrible weather, severe lightning and thunder, and a massive power outage that lasted hours. If you ever wonder whether Hawaii gets bad weather, check out this video shot yesterday afternoon.

I must say, the lightning was impressive. Here's a photo from last night, courtesy of StarAdvertiser newspaper.

What A Weekend & Now Beautiful BD Photos?

Sometimes it feels silly thinking of frivolous things that have no importance in the actual world... but sometimes it is those frivolous things... a monster that creeps from the closet at night, a carpet that flies in the air, a romance between a beautifully, awkward girl and an immortal that help us escape from life's troubles and the chaos that ensues... If only for a moment.

Bell and Edward in the streets of Brazil.

I love the top photo because I absolutely love their look. Bella is stunning in her form-fitted couture dress, and Edward is... Well, he's just Edward. No long trench coat, no stuffy attire. And I might add, I like the color of his skin tone, it's understated.

Jacob running with wedding invite.

Now this photo of Jacob running, for me, has an emotional impact. Movie Jacob (not Book Jacob) is some one that I feel very sorry for (except when we get to the imprinting, but we'll see how the screenwriter tackled that part of the book). Poor Jacob...

This photo of Alice helping Bella get ready, is one huge fail for me. Bella's extensions look odd and I really do not like the haircut that they gave Alice. I'm not going to even begin to understand if their hair grows or not, because in Anne Rice's books, it cannot be cut, am I wrong? Though Alice's face is beautiful with a short pixie cut, I preferred it a little longer.

Bella and Edward playing chess... Meh... This is just a still, and Edward does look adorable when he smiles, but Bella... There is something about her in this photo that I don't like and I can't quite put my fingers on it. Did they attempt to give her a sunburnt face?

I only wanted to post this last photo of the femme fatales above because I'm watching Game of Thrones on HBO and I swear the three blondes look like they could be siblings of the Targaryen. They have a weird look to me.

Over all I have to admit, I'm not excited about Breaking Dawn. I think once I get to see the actual trailer, maybe it will re-spark my enthusiasm, but just looking at the BD stills, it's more of a "they're okay", then an "OMG". (ahem, unlike the leaked photos that definitely caught my attention.)

Are you excited for Breaking Dawn?
