I Gave In... I Watched Adventureland!

So over at Twitarded, a discussion had brewed yesterday over KStew. I will say this for the record because... well, I just feel like commenting on her.

I never noticed her twitching or excessive blinking in Twilight. At all. Until, others commented on it, and then, that was all she wrote. Unfortunately, it was all I noticed thereafter.

But, in New Moon. Wow. She's worlds apart from Twilight, and a year older I may add, and her acting was believable.

I have had Adventureland, sitting on my desk for almost a month, and for some reason, I just couldn't bring myself to watch it. But after last nights discussion, I relented and popped it in.

The movie is set in 1987! Wooohoo. I was like in 10th grade, a complete juvenile delinquent and well... look.

What the fuck is up with my hair?
Why am I wearing all white?
And more importantly, why did I pose near my mom's car?
Did I think I was modeling? Cause the fucked up stucco and cable line in the background is horrid.

Back to the movie. What? Ryan Reynolds.. Well, heeellloo Ryan? Which I did not get till the very end, that his character sucks. Lying, cheating bastard! I still heart you Ryan.

So Adventureland takes place after James finishes college, where he soon finds out, that not only has his parents backed out of paying for his European summer trip, but also on any contributing funds towards his post graduate expenses.

James, with no work experience, is forced to take a low paying job at Adventureland, where we meet several other characters, including Em, who share in Jame's 'life sucks' attitude. Love brews between James and Em, and we soon come to learn, that Em has some serious issues. Well frankly, they all do, and that's the moral of the story.

What can I say, I freaking loved this movie! I love dry humor, with a fucked up undertone. It reminds me of director Wes Anderson's movies Rushmore and The Darjeeling Limited.

Now for her performance. Hey, she did a great job and I was rooting for her, through all her debauchery. In fact, I never thought for once, where's Edward? I felt her as Em. So much so, that when James catches Em leaving Connell's basement, and she starts crying, I cried.... I know. That's weird, because I didn't even cry during New Moon! But fuck, I felt bad for her.

Best parts of the movie. The scene where they get really high, and Em and James drive around in bumper cars while the Cure is playing. I LOVE THE CURE! That scene, stole my heart and threw me back almost twenty years.

Next great part. When Em is arguing with her step mom, and rips her wig off. Go fucking KStew! I actually yelled, "Hell Yeah!" Sorry, I had a bitch of a step mom too at that age, and what I wouldn't have done, to have told her my thoughts.

The ending, loved it! When James and Em finally have sex, I giggled. James is so innocently adorable, that I was thrilled that Em finally ended up with him.

Overall, the movie gets 4 stars from me because I love Bill Hader and Kristin Wiig, and for a killer soundtrack. I'm totally (yup, I said totally) glad that I took the time last night to watch it and if you haven't already, aw fuck it, go rent it. It's worth it.

By the way, my worst summer job. Being a waitress at Bakers Square, know why? Cause I ate pie like a fat ass every Thursday when they'd throw them out. Plus I don't like waiting on people. I have ADD and if you don't hurry the fuck up and order, I want to throw a hot dinner roll at you. Thus why my career has never been in the customer service industry.

Best summer job. Working at Ripcurl Surf shop. That's where I met my hubby. Awwww. Isn't that cute? Actually, we were both horrible at the surf shop, played the music way too loud, and overall, caused havoc to the unsuspecting tourists. Again, I should not be in customer service.

This was taken while we both worked at Ripcurl.
Yes, I understand there is boobie peeking out.

"That's the whole trouble. You can't ever find a place that's nice and peaceful, because there isn't any. You may think there is, but once you get there, when you're not looking, somebody'll sneak up and write "Fuck you" right under your nose." J.D. Salinger... RIP. The literary wold will miss you!

I must respectfully disagree with you about Adventureland (because that's my job...to be disagreeable). I wanted to love this movie. The 1980's were my glory days. I hoped to relate but, nope. I didn't care for it and the guy who played James annoyed me more than KStew. He's the poor man's Michael Cera (and that ain't sayin much). I thought KStew was just as huffy and spazzy as usual.

BTW, if people think I slam KStew just to slam her, that's not true. I could appreciate her in Into the Wild.

PS. My shittiest job ever was at an ice cream shop (walk up window only, no dining room) called Frosty Tips. That is really what it was called. I got fired.

Hey HG! I say this with only respect and love for you and your hubby: Your husband kinda looks like Tom Cruise in that picture. Hmmm. You know, the Tom Cruise back when he was sexy and before he went all crazy and kidnapped Katie.

Welll... I haven't seen this debate on Twitarded but I can imagine the lovely chaos. *ponders wonderment*

I liked Adventureland. And I'm a Kristen fan, despite how unpopular it seems to be. Her licking and lip biting don't bother me.

As far as Jesse Eisenberg I actually like him ten time more than Michael Cera, and I am a fan of Cera's. He's awesome in Superbad and Juno, not to mention Clark and Michael crack me up. But he's always the same dude. Year One just about killed me I didn't even finish it. And Nick and Norah was meh at best. However, Jesse Eisenberg kicked ass in Zombieland. Gosh that movie was awesome. I think he's got a little more depth when it comes to acting... Having said that, I truly like them both.

However, you know who take the cake? Ryan effin' Reynolds. Gosh that man in nommy. Mr. Cutie has a man crush which dictates that if I ever have the opportunity to sleep with the man (Mr. Nommy) I must so that he (Mr. Cutie that is) is that much closer to him (Mr. Nommy Reynolds)... Insane logic? Yep. Am I going to argue? Nope. ;)

Now what were we talking about? Kstew? I like her. ;)

(P.S. The Catcher in the Rye quote is awesomeness. I love that book. I'm in the middle of Franny and Zooey. That's enough rambling from me.)

@cutie - I stand corrected. Jesse Eisenberg was good in Zombieland.

@HG - I am so glad you liked Adventureland! When I threw that out there over on Twitarded, no one agreed or disagreed with me. And after seeing her cry in that movie, doesn't it make you wonder why she couldn't in New Moon? There should have been real tears in the breakup scene, or at the very least when she fell to the ground and curled up in the fetal position. She clearly has it in her. The soundtrack is killer. And she got to make out with Ryan Reynolds. *died*

That picture of you by your mom's car is hilarious!! You can look back and laugh now because you have a kick-ass followup picture to post of you and your hubby. You both are so cute! Speaking of cute...

@Cutie - I agree with everything you said. I like Jessie Eisenberg SO much more than Michael Cera. Jessie is sexy in an adorkable way. I thought he and Kristen actually had chemistry in that movie, all things considered. And Zombieland was an awesome movie. Woody Harrelson was great in that movie, too. And the Bill Murray cameo? LMFAO! Lucky you that there's a possible threesome on your horizon if you ever hook up with Ryan ;)

@mmMoxie - Once again, your blunt honesty is appreciated. I wouldn't want you any other way.

@Perpetual - ...before he went all crazy and kidnapped Katie... too funny!

@HG - Sorry! Forgot to ask if you watched Little Ashes last night, too?

OH HG! I love this post, and the comments are freakin killing me...srsly...

@cutie YOU BETTER CALL ME IF YOU EVER HAVE THE CHANCE TO HIT IT WITH RYAN "NOM NOM" REYNOLDS! sorry for yelling, I'm just very passionate.

The only reason why I would ever hate on Kstew is because I am so flippin' jealous that she has made-out with all my "movie boyfriends"... stupid slut. =) LOL

no really, I love Kristen, and I heart Adventureland. Jesse is amazing and hello! Mr. Nom Nom Reynolds is in it! oh and Bill Hader and Kristin Wiig! LOVE THEM! my favorite part is when Bill grabs the bat and chases that one dude. HEE-freakin-LARIOUS.

I Also love Jesse in Zombieland. that movie kicked some serious zombie ass, and Emma Stone was awesome in it too. (and Bill Murray...classic!)

aaaand I love Michael Cera. The to the End on that one. ;)

I stumbled on your blog from someone else's and had to check out what you thought about Adventureland! Wasn't it unexpectedly good?? I wrote a post a while ago about Kristen in the dvd's commentary. She was so convincing in it and the romantic story line was really sweet because of Jessie Eisenberg. I like him more than Michael Cera, there's just something more awkwardly cute about him (this may just be me, but for some reason whenever I see Jessie or Nick Jonas I think the both of them remind me of each other).

@mmMoxi I lurve you. It’s okay, if you are not a KStew fan. Oh and Frosty tips... LOL!! Drunken Madlibs tomorrow!!

@Perpetual Fangirl. Tom Cruise? Really? Like a mexican version of Tom? *snickers*

@Cutie You know I had to throw some awesomeness in there, by quoting J.D. Salinger. *wipes tear* I knew you’d like that part. :)

@Lisa, I still haven’t seen Little Ashes but if all the other bitches in the twisphere stop renting it, then I can finally get my dvd via Netflix! Hehehe. It’s on back order, whatever they call it and I don’t want to watch it on my computer. I need to see it on my big tv! I won’t tell my husband what it’s about and will just pop the movie in.

@KG You know where I thought Bill Hader was funny. As the soldier in Pineapple Express. Just that short clip, and I was dying.

@TwiTwin1 JFC! I know you love KStew. I would never say anything bad about her to you, or you’d have my fucking head.

@Sparkle for Twilight I really thought it was quirky and great! KStew and Jessie were adorable for each other. I actually got mad when Jessie’s character went out with Lisa P. (hehe I love saying Lisa P., cause we all know, Lisa P is hot, right?)

Okay you know what else I love about this movie? That you can sock someone in there Pudendal.
(Twitwin1, I told you l love that word)

17foreverlisa said...

@HG - LOL!!! Well, for the record, this Lisa P. was hot back in the day. Cheerleader, Homecoming attendant, yada, yada. I don't know what eff happened. I am starting a Fit for Forks campaign, though. It won't be enough, but it will be better!!

@Lisa Oh sweet Jesus, you just gave me your new name. Well, um, it is your real name, but I’m calling you now Lisa P. :) and your beautiful and I love you. Did you fucking see my highschool picture? I’m seriously lucky someone married me. :)

I havn't seen Adventureland but it's funny that you never noticed her twitching in T, my daughter (12) asked me the other night when we watched it for like the 50th time if she had tourettes! She was fantastic in NM though.
PMSL at your 1987 photo only coz there would not be a single person on the planet male or female who doesn't laugh at their 80's photos. I loved the 80's for so many reasons (sigh)...
You & your hubby are so cute! Is he Mexican? That sounds so exotic to me!

17foreverlisa said...

@HG - I will answer to Lisa P. LOL!!! And, yes, I did see your high school picture and commented on it earlier :) I'm sure we all have similar photos if we were brave enough to put them out there. Post idea? Hmmmm...

I have seen Adventure Land. I missed part of the beginning when he graduate college so I was like, “why are these guys drinking and smoking?” My daughter says, “hello? He just graduated college!” OH! Keeping up now.

And here's the list:
Panic Room—saw bits & pieces

Speak—sad—there is a very important message in this film. If someone rapes you, for Jimmie Christmas, tell someone and get help. Or cut off their un-sparkling peen! {sorry}

Cake Eaters—funny & sad--who wouldn’t want to bump uglies before they die from an incurable disease?

Zathura—she plays a great frozen sister!

In the Land of Women—was on Life Time channel and was edited for TV badly—like it

Adventure Land—liked it and the Bill Hader & Kristen Wig part LMAO. Ryan yum! Lisa P.! {I am not cleaning up that dried puke}

The Messengers—weird one

So, okay, okay, I have seen a good majority of her work. Damit! It-is-hard-to-fight.
I never said that I didn’t want to be friends just that it would be better not to.

So will I see the Runaways? Probably when it’s on DVD. I was a Joan Jett fan in the 80’s but that was after Runaways. ??
It seemed that when I watched MTV, you’d seen them playing I love Rock n’Roll all the time.

Yea, I have some 80's pictures too but I think that's a TOTALLY different blog! LOL

Aloha HG & Everybody!

Well, I can't read this post entirely, because I don't like spoilers. So I'm gonna watch it, and then come back to discuss (hopefully we'll start that discussion on MOTU, soon, LoL)

Oh.My.God. Please don't mind me saying so, but I don't know who to look at in that photo, you or your husband. What a sexy couple.
(it's going to sound so cliched when I tell you you're stunningly beautiful, but that's the truth)

After torturing hubby with countless viewings of Twilight I brought home
Adventureland one day and it ended up being an unexpected treat for us both.

He loved all the music in it and I laughed out loud at it...cuz, ya see I worked at an amusement park when I was younger--and while I was not Kristen's character, I recognized A LOT of people I knew in these characters--and the parties and the pot. SO while it wasn't the best movie it was extra funny to me. And hubby totally knew Ryan's character was lying about playing with someone famous.

On Isabella "Bella" Swan's 18th birthday, Edward Cullen, the vampire she loves, and his family throw her a birthday party. While unwrapping a gift, she gets a paper cut, which causes Edward's adopted brother, Jasper, to be overwhelmed by her blood's scent and attempt to kill Bella. To protect her, Edward decides to end their relationship, and the Cullens move away from Forks.

I liked Adventureland ok but I didn't love it. I really didn't feel the 80s (and I lived those fuckers - graduated from HS in 1988!) I dunno, just weird.

I recently watched "How To Be" - didn't even make it through the whole movie, and "Little Ashes" - again, didn't make it through the whole movie. I suck.

BTW, your hubs is cute... just sayin.

See you in Forks bi-atch.

I haven't seen Adventureland either but I may watch if nothing else for the killer soundtrack and Nom Nom Reynolds (pmsl) I too was a teen in the 80's, go check out the FB page for the photos lol, I was so the rocker/goth/whatever/freakazoid lol and was/still am a huge Cure fan. Was listening to Heaven on the way to work this am lol.
I'm not a fan of the Stew-ped as most know, mainly cos she canoodles with Edward in RL as well as on screen, greedy fucking beyatch.

I used to work in retail and although I was good I fucked with the customers all day, doing weird stuff and adding stuff to the conversation like the day where whatever we sold we had to say I'm sure that'll be a major contribution to road safety. We had an egg fight in the shop once too (a friend was the owner luckily) and a major water fight. Man that was a good job. But I got bored with the people haha and now have my own office where I shirk work and play on blogs. Hope they never cut my internet access here else I'm totally fucked, I may explode hahahaha

I have to disagree with you as well. I had a hard time feeling like this movie took place in 1987. I had hairspray and high tops. I didnt feel like any of the characters were in the 80's and we did not have pull off tops on beer cans in 1987! I just felt like I was watching a movie that took place in 1979.
